Ofsted report

Ofsted logoIn February 2007, Ofsted arrived at Chequers Playgroup to ensure that the children attending the settling were receiving the quality of education and care that is required.

Chequers Playgroup received a grading of ‘good’ in every area that was inspected, which means that that playgroup provision is acknowledged as strong.

Here’s an overview and summary of what Ofsted observed and found to be Good:

GOOD: Helping the children to be healthy

Children’s growth and development is well promoted and children are developing a positive attitude to healthy living – they look forward to playing in the fresh air.

GOOD: Protecting children from harm or neglect and helping them stay safe

Children come in happily and quickly separate from their carers because they receive a warm welcome from the staff. The environment is child-centred because the walls are decorated with attractive posters and displays of art work to help children to feel emotionally secure and valued.

GOOD: Helping children achieve well and enjoy what they do

Children have a positive attitude to learning and they work well together. Some children are content to work at their own self chosen task, but when they play together; children chat and are able to make their needs known.

Joining in with counting rhymes is a popular activity where staff promote counting on when using fingers as a visual aid. Children are really enthusiastic about the use of painting and drawing and are given a sense of pride in their work because it is displayed to decorate the hall.

GOOD: Helping children make a positive contribution

Children feel at home in the playgroup because staff have a positive approach and welcome families from all backgrounds. Children’s individual needs are robustly met because of the effective verbal communication between parents and the staff. Staff act as positive role models, being calm and giving polite responses to help children to manage their own behaviour.

The partnership with parents is strong due to the good communication they have with staff. Parents commented on being pleased with the playgroup provision, stating that the staff are good with the children and there are lots of different activities to choose from, thus contributing to the good overall provision received.

GOOD: Organisation

Staff are committed to further improving their practice by attending ongoing relevant training and children benefit from being cared for by staff who understand how they develop and learn. Staff work effectively as a team which contributes to providing a happy learning environment for all the children.
